It Can Wait

Elgin High School Students Oppose Texting and Driving

It Can WaitA nation-wide program called “It Can Wait” is being advertised this week for a good cause that rings close to many hearts. A parent’s worst nightmare is to receive a call of an accident his/her teen has been involved in.  Unfortunately, a large number of accidents involving teens are due to texting while driving.  Statistics show that it only takes a few seconds, glancing down at a phone, to cause a life-changing accident for all parties involved.  This progam comes after the annual Alive at 25 series that the Oklahoma Highway Patrol puts on each year for high school sophomores at Elgin.

Elgin High School principal, Curtis Lorah, is trying to bring the lesson home to the students in his building.  “We are getting on board with this important campaign.  I feel this is a lesson that many don’t learn unless they have been involved in a close call on the road, and frankly, that is too late.  We are signing pledges in the high school to not text while driving, and I am hoping the students really think about it.”

The National “It Can Wait” day  to sign the pledge is September 19th, Wednesday, and the Elgin students are supportive of the cause.  The high school will also have a car out in front of the building that serves as a reminder of what can happen when someone chooses to text and drive.
